Entry to the Folk Club usually costs £8 (£6 for members of Loughton Club). Cash only, please. and the door money goes to the guest artist on the night. We sometimes charge a little more if we book a big name artist, who wants a guaranteed fee, or a band with a lot of musicians, all of whom need to cover their costs.
You don’t need to book in advance but if you’re coming from far away, drop us an email and we’ll keep a space for you.
The Folk Club is in a room upstairs on the first floor. Unfortunately Loughton Club has no lift, so it isn’t accessible to wheelchair users. If you have limited mobility you need to know that the bar and toilets are downstairs on the ground floor.
It doesn’t have to be traditional folk material but it is usually acoustic. Our regular contributions include music hall songs, “modern music”, self-penned songs, instrumentals, blues, music from outside the UK, readings and poetry. We're open to anything! Our featured guests have included well-respected folk musician Paula Ryan, Good Habits, a young, exciting duo playing accordion and cello, who have become very successful on the wider folk scene, singer-songwriters on tour from the United States and Canada, a ceilidh band, a trio from France, who played Breton dance music and a sea shanty group.

No, although we encourage anyone who comes to the Folk Club to become a member of Loughton Club. (For details, ask at the Bar). Members of Loughton Club receive a discount on entry to the Folk Club and a small discount on drinks at the bar. They can also use the pool and snooker tables in Loughton Club and they get free entry to some of the events laid on by Loughton Club. By introducing more members we keep the Loughton Club committee happy and so we can continue to use their upstairs room for the folk club.
The age and experience of floor spot performers and main acts ranges from teenagers doing their first ever live experience in front of an audience, through others who are building their experience, to people who have been involved with folk/live acoustic music for over 50 years. The wealth of experience of some club members and acts mixes beautifully with the fresh talent of people who just want to come along give it a try in a friendly environment. And if you just want to join us to listen, enjoy and find out what it is all about then that’s perfect as well. Folk and acoustic music knows no boundaries, we welcome everyone.
